Nov. 2, 2012 - PRLog -- Oracle India and Startup Village Will Work Together to Help 30,000 Kerala Engineering Students Develop Industry-Relevant Skills To Meet The Growing Demand for a Highly-Skilled Technology Workforce

Kochi, November 2, 2012: Oracle India and Startup Village, the first telecom business incubator in the country, have signed a MoU to integrate the Oracle Academy’s Advanced Computer Science curriculum into Startup Village’s engineering program.

This effort will allow Startup Village to build a strong foundation for product start-ups in the country. It will prepare over 30,000 students and 200 teachers from 100 engineering colleges in Kerala for successful IT careers and meet the growing local demand for a highly-skilled technology workforce.

The Oracle Academy’s Advanced Computer Science program provides universities and students with hands-on access to Oracle database and middleware software, and related curriculum. Students gain exposure to Oracle’s world-class software, giving them a competitive advantage.

In addition, Startup Village students and faculty will have access to Java Fundamentals and Programming classes, to help students gain hands-on experience with Java.

Java is the one of the world’s most popular computing platforms; it is used by more than 9 million developers and powers more than 3 billion devices. As the steward of Java, Oracle is committed both to the investment in Java technology and in creative ways to educate a new generation about Java and the opportunities it brings.

The Oracle Academy helps 1.9 million students in 97 countries, including 150,099 students from 441 educational institutions across India, gain industry-relevant skills prior to entering the workforce.

“Education contributes substantially to the socio-economic development of the country and it is our goal to provide our youth with educational opportunities to increase their employability in the demanding workforce of tomorrow,” said Mr. P. K. Kunhalikutty, Minister of Industries and IT, Government of Kerala. “We are pleased to work with Oracle India and Oracle Academy to help advance our students’ knowledge base and training through professional curriculum.. I am confident that students in Kerala will gain a competitive advantage as they prepare to enter the global workforce.”

“Startup Village is dedicated to developing technology education programs that foster a highly-trained and entrepreneurial workforce to drive innovation and start=up technologies,” said Sanjay Vijayakumar, Chairperson of the Governing Board of Startup Village. “A shortage of skilled IT staff can limit productivity and growth and may lead to delays with business IT implementations. By working with Oracle Academy, we can help strengthen our engineering programs in Kerala and help our engineering students to become startups and set up their own enterprises”.

“The Oracle Academy provides educational institutions with access to changing curriculum and access to leading technology that enables students to gain 21st century skills for successful IT careers,” said Krishna Sistla, Senior Director, Oracle Education Initiatives, Oracle Asia Pacific. “As a result the program helps produce high-trained graduates with the computer science and technology skills needed in almost every sector of the Indian marketplace.”

Startup Village CEO Sijo Kurvilla said our target for the first year is to support 100 institutions, 10,000 students, and 200 faculties as they fully integrate the Oracle Academy’s curriculum and resources. This effort will allow us to quickly roll the program out to our students, allow us to more easily add additional institutions to meet demand, and, most importantly, help our students start developing the critical skills needed to be successful in the marketplace.’’
