Nov. 1, 2012 - PRLog -- Throughout the body there is an incredible network of about 70,000 miles of blood vessels.  This intricate network that transports blood throughout the body systems is important because without it we can run into serious health issues.  The blood vessels which carry blood from the heart are called arteries, while the veins return the blood to the heart.  The circulation of blood is important because, in order to nourish and cleanse the cells of the body we need blood to circulate through the body systems.  Arteries transport oxygenated blood and veins transport deoxygenated blood.  As you may or may not know, blood is also responsible for regulating the body’s temperature.
Some of the signs the body gives us that maybe our blood is not circulating as it should is cold hands and feet, discoloration of extremities (arms, legs, hands and feet) decreased sensation, and numbness.  When there is a compromise in the circulation of the blood it is known as vascular dis-ease.  Vascular Dis-ease is a serious dis-ease of the arteries and veins that blocks circulation anywhere in the body. Vascular disease is serious and can lead to disability, amputation, organ damage and even death.
Poor blood circulation can be as a result of a myriad of factors.  There are at least two you may be familiar with which are a lack of exercise and poor eating habits.  The reason these two are mentioned is because these are the two that we have the most power to control.  Walking is a great exercise that can jump start inspiration for other workouts that are fun and adaptable for anyone.  Eating fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as, drinking more water is the best way to begin improving the choices made when it comes to what to eat!
The foods that aid the blood in circulating better throughout the body are citrus fruits that are high in vitamin C like, tangerines, oranges, grapefruit, cantaloupe, kiwis, strawberries and papaya.  Nuts and seeds high in vitamin E such as, pumpkin seeds, walnuts, almonds, and sunflower seeds can help prevent blood clots.
Herbs combined with eating healthy can serve as natural blood thinners, anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatory aids that certainly combat the ravages of vascular dis-ease.  Herbs such as garlic, turmeric, cayenne and curry all have properties that serve to increase blood flow, strengthen veins and reduce inflammation.
