PRLog (Press Release) - Nov. 1, 2012 - St. Paul, Minn. – The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) has designated November, 2012 as Healthy Skin Month. Dermatologists are medical doctors who are experts in conditions affecting the skin, hair and nails. No other doctors or practitioners have as much knowledge and experience with skin problems.
The Board-certified dermatologists at Dermatology Consultants, one of the largest and oldest dermatology practices in the Twin Cities, have some recommendations for keeping your skin healthy and glowing throughout your lifetime.
Protect your skin from the sun - Use sunscreen to help prevent signs of aging and decrease skin cancer risk. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 and reapply every two hours. Wear broad-brimmed hats and sunglasses anytime you will be exposed to the sun.
Stay away from tanning beds – Ultraviolet light from tanning beds has been proven to cause skin cancer and wrinkling. There is no safe or healthy tan.
Eat a “rainbow of colors” – Antioxidants from colorful fruits and vegetables can help combat the effects of pollutants and toxins on your skin. Eat plenty of these as well as foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids like coldwater fish.
Moisturize your skin regularly – Especially in the dry winter months, moisturize head to toe with a perfume-free product. If you have very dry skin and/or eczema, see your dermatologist for a specific treatment plan for your skin.
Perform a self-skin exam - Use the AAD’s body mole map to perform your own skin exam and keep a record of growths on your skin. Review the AAD video to learn more about spotting suspicious moles, growths or other changes to your skin and see your dermatologist if you find something.
Schedule an annual skin cancer screening with a dermatologist - Rates for skin cancer, including deadly melanoma, are rising. Make sure you visit your dermatologist once a year for a complete skin check. It could save your life.
