The method is somewhat similar to turning, but the material is applied instead of being removed. It is possible to build layers to different thicknesses for subsequent machining to accurate dimensions. Properly handled, the material will not drip or sag while being applied.
The RFA-680 Ribbon Cast system was specifically developed to fill the need for faster production of high quality rollers by eliminating the necessity to pre-heat the urethane system components prior to use. The process is suitable for manufacturing both small rollers and large parts requiring up to several hundred kilograms of urethane.
Due to its speed of reaction, the product is best suited to applications employing automated dispense systems.
In this process, the Ribbon Cast material is pumped through a metering machine through a traversing mix head that deposits the mixed product onto a rotating steel shaft. Depending on the required thickness, one or more passes might be required to obtain the correct build. Once applied, the polyurethane will achieve a final cure at room temperature.
