With a publishing career spanning 25 years, Masterson’s expertise has helped lead the Times to increased revenue while avoiding significant cuts to newsroom staff. His leadership in the community has united regional influencers and businesses under a unified vision, and he has even led a capital campaign to build a local Boys & Girls Club — a charity drive that raised more than $5.5 million.
“You’ve got to make sure that you take care of the community. You’ve got to make sure that you have integrity,” Masterson said in an interview with E&P managing editor Kristina Ackermann. “I love what I do. I believe that we have a tremendous responsibility to provide the community with perspective and information, and that’s an enormous opportunity.”
Each year, E&P recognizes a publisher who has demonstrated sound business acuity, visionary leadership, innovative problem-solving, and, most importantly, measurable results.
The magazine selected Masterson from a broad field of more than 100 nominations submitted from newspapers around the globe. Candidates were evaluated based on a number of criteria, including quality of content, diversity of product offerings, digital innovations, management style, and vision for the future of the newspaper industry.
