As a car insurance website, CheapCarInsurance.net regularly posts tips and advice about staying safe on the road. Even the safest of drivers can't afford to go without car insurance, of course, but safe driving habits help to keep premiums low. "By avoiding accidents and other mishaps, a driver is more likely to have an affordable premium," says Anthony King. "Winter is a prime time for people to lose sight of their safe driving habits. When the roads are covered in ice and snow, new rules apply. The last thing anyone wants to do is ruin an excellent driving record due to poor winter driving habits."
Many winter driving tips are featured on CheapCarInsurance.net. One prime example is not to follow too closely while driving. "This tip applies throughout the year," says Anthony King. "It's even more critical during the winter because there is less room for error. When the roads are slick, following closely is even more dangerous. Rear-end collisions seem to go up during the winter, and that's probably why. We advise drivers to allow an even greater distance than usual. If an icy patch comes along, a driver will be less likely to slide into the car that's in front of him."
Another tip that's offered by CheapCarInsurance.net is to always clear away snow and ice from a car before hitting the road. In addition to maintaining visibility, clearing off a car enhances overall safety on winter roads. "It's tempting to just clear away a small area on the windshield and get going," says one of the site's founders. "However, this just isn't adequate. If snow and ice are covering the car, they will fly off of it when it's on the road, which can block visibility for other drivers. No one likes being pummeled with flying ice and snow, so drivers should take time to clear their cars adequately. We recommend parking in the garage, if possible, or using a remote starter to at least get the car warmed up prior to clearing it of snow and ice."
CheapCarInsurance.net also advises drivers not to floor the gas pedal after becoming stuck in the snow. "It's really frustrating to get stuck in the snow," says PR Manager Anthony King. "Most people's first instinct is to floor the gas pedal in order to force the car out of the rut. This approach just doesn't work. It can actually make the problem worse. The best thing to do is to gently press the gas pedal. If that doesn't work, it may be necessary to get out and dig the car out by hand."
By posting these tips online, CheapCarInsurance.net hopes to keep drivers as safe as possible this winter. "Winter is a really treacherous time to be on the road," says PR Manager Anthony King. "People have to drive, of course, but they should be especially careful and conscientious when the roads are snowy and icy." Without keeping these and other tips in mind, drivers are more likely to get into accidents during the winter. "A single accident can make car insurance premiums soar. If drivers keep that in mind, they're sure to agree that driving safely is the way to go."
