ST. PAUL, Minnesota – Open to Interpretation (http://www.open2interpretation.com/
The book, the second in the Open to Interpretation series, began with a call for photographic entries to address the theme "Intimate Landscape." More than 2,500 photographs were submitted, and Karen Irvine, associate director of the Museum of Contemporary Photography at Columbia College Chicago, oversaw the selection of photographs. Once the photographs were selected, writers then submitted their interpretations of the images in either poetry or prose. Patrick Thomas, editor and program manager of Milkweed Editions, chose two written narratives for each photograph.
Nearly 700 participants, from 12 different countries and 45 states, submitted their work for consideration. Notable photographers and writers whose work in included in the book include writers Diane Glancy, Marcia Peck, Fred Arroyo, Catherine Watson, Daniel Chacón and photographers Doug Beasley, Heidi Lender, Harold Ross, Sarah Malakoff and David Wolf.
"Open to Interpretation addresses both the human impulse to create art, as well as the urge to try to define or make sense of the work created," said Clare O'Neill, publisher of the Open to Interpretation series. "The pairings of the photographs with the written interpretations offer the reader different points of entry to each image, opening a dialogue between artist and writer, image and audience."

About Open to Interpretation
Open to Interpretation is a juried book competition bringing together photographers and writers. Each book begins with a themed call for photographs. The selected images become the literary inspiration for the writers' submissions, from which two are chosen to accompany each image. The subsequent pairing of photographs and written pieces, culminates in the publication of a high-quality, fine art book.
The first two books in the Open to Interpretation series, "Water's Edge” and “Intimate Landscape” are now available for purchase. Writing submissions are currently open for the third book in the series, "Fading Light," along with photography submissions for the fourth book, "Love + Lust."
