Former Boxing Champ to Give Motivational Talk at Waterloo Elementary School

Syd “The Jewel” Vanderpool to give inspiring presentation to St. Nicholas Catholic School students

KITCHENER, ONTARIO, 30 OCTOBER 2012– On Thursday, November 1, local entrepreneur and former super middleweight champion boxer Syd “The Jewel” Vanderpool will step onto a different platform – not one for a sports award or medal, but one in front of more than 200 students at Waterloo’s St. Nicholas Catholic Elementary School.

“I’ve always felt it’s important to give back to the community in which I live and work,” explains Vanderpool of his upcoming school presentation. “I hope that the kids in the audience can learn from some of my challenges and be inspired to reach for their own dreams.”

Vanderpool is stopping in at St. Nicholas to speak to students in grades 4 through 8 about how a commitment to sports can help build the drive to succeed in athletics as well as school. Vanderpool will also touch on how he overcame hardships and dealt with both success and loss, shaping his perspective on what it takes to achieve personal goals. St. Nicholas Principal Paul Smith says he’s looking forward to Vanderpool’s talk and thinks it will be a great way for students to learn about the value of hard work. “I am sure the kids will love hearing about his experiences.”

Vanderpool’s school appearance is part of his plan to bring boxing to the forefront of local sports, culminating in the pro fight event, the “Return of the Gladiators.” The evening of world-class bouts is scheduled for Saturday, November 3, 2012, at Marshall Hall (425 Bingeman’s Centre Drive) in Kitchener. Having made the move from inside the ring to outside, now as a trainer and promoter, Vanderpool recognizes the calibre of fighters that hail from Waterloo Region. “We’ve had such an abundance of local boxing talent in this area and any chance we have to showcase it, we take.”
