PRLog - Oct. 29, 2012 - HOUSTON -- The day may have had a chill in the air but the members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.’s Southeast Texas Cluster were fired up and ready to step up to serve Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.’s South Central Region. Pledging over 3,000 community service hours to support the organization’s international asthma awareness initiative. The Southeast Texas Cluster will make a major impact to ensure that their communities will be well informed about the triggers and dangers associated with asthma.

Alpha Kappa Alpha’s International President Carolyn House Stewart understands how our nation’s children’s quality of life is affected by asthma and knew that the women of Alpha Kappa Alpha could aid in the effort. Led by Soror Patricia Webb, the International Program Representative for the Region, the sorority members got behind Stewart’s vision with a national campaign launched in partnership with the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development and the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. “This is an initiative close to my heart as my very own daughter suffers with asthma,” said Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.’s South Central Regional Director Chelle Wilson to the over three hundred members of the first black Greek sorority gathered at the annual Southeast Texas Cluster Retreat for Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.’s South Central Region.

Supporting the vision even further area chapter presidents of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.’s Southeast Texas Cluster took a different approach to the service they provide by committing to serve a certain number of hours focused solely on asthma awareness. The 15 area graduate chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.’s Southeast Texas Cluster committed to provide 3,409 hours to educate and enlighten others about asthma prevention and management. The pledging of hours of service has turned into a friendly competition in the South Central Region. Since its launch Regional Director Wilson has crisscrossed through the various clusters in the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico and Texas getting excited as members stepped up to serve with more than just donations and money but something that is even more valuable, their time. To date, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.’s South Central Region has pledged over 9,000 hours and there are still more cluster retreats for Regional Director Wilson to attend. Southeast Texas Cluster Coordinator Jullette Spivey is not worried as to whether her cluster will be on top or not. “The Southeast Texas Cluster is always ready to serve and steps up to any challenge given.”

The Houston area Alpha Kappa Omega Chapter hosted the 2012 Southeast Texas Cluster retreat, where Edwina Johnson served as general chairman. Besides handling the business of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., the members took time to reconnect and reengaged to reignite their service. Areas in their realm of service will benefit greatly in months to come as the members are armed with new ideas, new programs, and new goals for implementing timeless service.

In addition to promoting asthma awareness, area chapter presidents took on the task of collecting wigs in support of breast cancer awareness. Wigs that were long, short, and every length in between will be donated to Beauty Before During and Beyond Breast Cancer Organization founded by Vernita Graves, a seven-year breast cancer survivor. “All members of the Southeast Texas Cluster and the South Central Region are always ready, willing, and able to step up and serve. I am excited about their enthusiasm and await the benefits from their valuable service to others,” concluded Regional Director Wilson.
