According to the annual Winter Fuels Outlook released by the U.S. Energy Department's Energy Information Administration (EIA), the upcoming winter is expected to be colder than average, resulting in increase in electricity and heating fuel consumption.
This increase may lead to a 20 percent hike in heating costs in certain areas (like the Northeast) where households use heating oil as the main heating source. As EIA explains, the rise in heating costs is associated rather with more days that will require turning up the heat, than the increase in fuel prices.
MaxAir provides many services to homes throughout Maryland, including Baltimore HVAC servicing and replacement. “If you want to save money on heating, it’s important to make sure your HVAC system is functioning properly and is at its maximum efficiency,”
He explained that malfunctioning furnace, dirty filters and air ducts, and outdated thermostat that is lacking custom control functions are a few of the reasons why heating costs can get higher, regardless of how cold the weather is. “When your thermostat is located in a wrong spot or is just bad at reading the indoor temperature, you end up running heat when you don’t need to, which is a waste of resources,” added Murphy.
Besides getting the HVAC system inspected and tuned up before winter, there are a few other ways to keep the heating costs low. According to the statistics, heating and cooling account for 40 to 70 percent of home energy costs, which is why proper insulation is the key to reducing these expenses.
“Such simple things as removing window screens, installing storm windows, sealing the gaps around windows and doors, applying weather strips and sealing off unused rooms can go a long way in terms of energy savings,” pointed out Murphy.
He also added that winterizing one’s home will help reduce the strain on the HVAC unit, which helps prolong its life and minimize operation costs.
A properly functioning heating unit will help ensure that homeowners are getting the most out of their investment, and protecting themselves from unexpected expenses, such as repair or replacement.
