The Office of Development is responsible for supporting the Hargrave mission by engaging donors and special interests in various aspects of the Academy. Responsibilities include capital projects, to include new buildings and renovations of current structures, to endowment donations, the department promotes, advocates, and supports the mission of the school.

Smith's history includes his previous position as Director of Development for the New York Institute of Technology, where he lead fundraising efforts for multiple departments, including the School of Management, College of the Arts and Sciences, College of Education, and Athletics.
In addition to his experience with NYIT, Smith also served as the Major Gift Officer for Gettysburg College in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. As Major Gift Officer, his responsibilities included development of the U.S. Midwest region and implementation and execution of the college's strategic plan for giving.
Previously, Smith taught sections of World History and U.S. History at the Community College of Allegheny County, where he also worked with the college's admissions and development offices. Smith also served in the U.S. Air Force, completely eight years of service and achieving the rank of Technical Sergeant.
Smith has moved to Chatham with his wife Kate and their dog Rex, a Black Lab.
“Kate and I came from an area with over 20 million people (New York City). We had every convenience, but we didn’t know our neighbors" said Smith. "We have found a very gracious and open community in Chatham.”
