Doherty Staffing Solutions executives presented a check for $20,000 to Riverland Community College in a brief meeting at the Doherty office in Owatonna, Minnesota, on Monday, October 22. Riverland Community College’s Interim College President Kent Hanson and Dean for Institutional Advancement Steve Bowron accepted the donation, bringing Doherty’s total contribution to the technical and community college to $125,000 in the last 6 years.
This year the Riverland Community College Foundation also awarded Doherty Staffing Solutions Endowed Scholarships in the amount of $500 to two students enrolled at Riverland Community College in technical programs.
Annual support from the business community
The funds were raised through the 6th Annual Doherty Scholarship Golf Classic, held on June 11, a project led by Doherty Vice President Gauher Mohammad. Other sponsors for the yearly charitable event included Fidelity Bank, Beth and John Fondell, Gopher Sport, Jennings Family Foundation, Insurance Applications Group, LLC, Jostens, Loffler Companies, Plaza Morena Restaurant, Riverland Community College, SPX Corporation, TPS Insurance Agency, Truth Hardware, and US Bank, Viracon, Dan Gorman, Gauher Mohammad, and Tim and Val Doherty.
Proceeds from the golf tournament provide special scholarships to Riverland Community College students who are enrolled in classes to enhance or update their skills, with the objective of advancing in their jobs with local companies. More than 500 students graduate annually from Riverland Community College; 80% percent remain in the southern Minnesota region, working in welding, machining, forklift operations, and other industrial positions.
Providing opportunities for Southern Minnesota students
Doherty Staffing Solutions Chairman and owner Tim Doherty was in Owatonna to present the check to Hanson and Bowron on Monday. He said, “We are pleased to be contributing again to educational scholarship opportunities for students in southern Minnesota. We believe these funds are going to a great cause and will have an impact on students’ earning potential. More than ever, communities like Austin, Albert Lea, and Owatonna need skilled workers to build strong economies and attract new businesses to their areas. This is a passion for the Doherty Staffing team and myself; we are committed to supporting Minnesota students and helping them prepare for great job and career opportunities.”
Dean Bowron had this to say about the relationship between Doherty and Riverland, “There need to be partnerships between businesses and public education to fill skill gaps and enable workers to get the training they need to hold higher skilled jobs in the community. I’m a huge supporter of the partnerships we have with companies like Doherty and we’re thrilled with the way Doherty works with us. Their support for Riverland Community College also translates into support for our students, their families and communities, and for growing local businesses and industries in southern Minnesota. To build a better workforce, our students need technical skills and we’re proud to work with Doherty to get there.”
