PRLog - Oct. 29, 2012 - Henkel wins Arabia CSR award; reinforces sustainability pledge

Leadership in sustainable business practices among the core priorities for Henkel GCC

In a major recognition for its commitment to sustainability, Henkel GCC - one of the top names in the regional home care category – was conferred the 5th Arabia Corporate Social Responsibility [CSR] Award here today. Henkel won the second award for its efforts in spearheading sustainable business practices.

The Arabia CSR awards ceremony was held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, Chairman and CEO of Emirates Group and Chairman of Dubai Airport. Memosh Khawaja, General Manager -- Laundry and Homecare [GCC] at Henkel, received the awards from Habiba Al Marashi, President of the Arabia CSR, at a glittering ceremony held at the Jumeirah Zabeel Saray Hotel.

Henkel GCC was recognized with the second Arabia CSR award for its contribution to sustainability – from raw materials and production to transportation, product use and disposal. Henkel’s sustainability strategy is focused on two dimensions – generating More Value and Reduced Footprint. Undertaken under the umbrella theme of ‘Achieving More With Less’, the strategy aims to increase the value created by Henkel in the areas of social progress, safety, health, performance and reduce its carbon footprint in water, energy and waste.

“It is a matter of great privilege for Henkel GCC to be honored with the Arabia CSR awards. Sustainability is part of Henkel’s DNA since our inception in 1876. The Arabia CSR award is a major inspiration for us to sustain our mission to contribute more significantly to the local community,” said Memosh Khawaja.

As part of this focus, Henkel is currently partnering Carrefour GCC to educate consumers and using school kids for recycling initiatives. In this, Henkel educates the kids and encourages shoppers on environmental issues, thus raising the general awareness focused on recycling of plastic bottles. Plastic recycling is one of Henkel’s strategic projects and it has been adopted by Choitram in the UAE, followed up on a larger scale in partnership with Dubai Chamber and its corporate sustainability network group.

Henkel has structured its social contribution activities around three core elements – supporting employee volunteering  as the MIT Initiative Corporate Volunteering Program; corporate and brand engagement and emergency aid. The company’s donations in 2011 totaled around 6 million Euros and in more than 2,300 social projects, it lent its support to over 750,000 people around the world.

Henkel’s sustainability goal by 2030 is to triple the value it creates for the footprint made by its operations, products and services. Called “Factor 3”, it is aimed at increasing the value or to reducing the footprint by three times. This is to be achieved by either increasing the output by three times using the same resource input or getting the same outcome using one-third of the input.

“Commitment to leadership in sustainability is one of our core corporate values. This is a tradition that dates back to our founder, Fritz Henkel, and is firmly embedded in our corporate values. For Henkel, sustainability is not about quick wins or opportunistic goals, but rather a major driver for innovation and an increasingly important differentiator for our businesses. Maintaining a balance between economic success, protection of the environment, and social responsibility has been fundamental to our corporate culture for decades. Our Sustainability strategy embodies three core pillars - 3Ps [products, partners and people] which are leveraged to execute our initiatives,” added Memosh Khawaja.
