Follow on Google News | Grand Junction Area College Students Help Peers with Three Charitable CausesIntelliTec College Student Ambassadors wrap up a summer of giving with three charitable fundraising events to help out their fellow peers. They organized a community flea market, a food drive, and a school supplies drive.
By: IntelliTec College in Grand Junction Dean of Students Shelby Maloney explains, “It can get expensive to be a full-time college student, and IntelliTec is always looking for ways to help its students earn extra money, be it through our work-study program, job placement office or campus events. A flea market seemed to be a perfect venue to get the campus and community together for the same cause: to make some extra spending money.” Maloney adds that community sales like this one “are fun family-friendly events that allow everyone to get out and enjoy the beautiful Western Slope weather.” Members of the community were encouraged to come out and take home a treasure (or ten) and to bring items of their own to sell. The much anticipated Community Flea Market was held Saturday, September 1, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Everything from used toys, clothing, sporting goods, tools, exercise equipment, furniture, household items, glassware, antiques and other treasures were be up for sale. Refreshments were be sold to benefit the “Food for Friends” program, and food donations were encouraged. Food for Friends, which benefitted greatly from the Community Flea Market, was there for students of IntelliTec College to help offset living expenses while in school. Students in need of these services were able to submit a request to the Student Ambassadors Club, who then created healthy food bags for them. A competition food drive to benefit this cause was completed in early August where approximately 1600 items were donated, and the winning team was awarded an ice cream social. The Student Ambassadors also presented six gift cards per term in the amount of $10 each for the Food for Friends cause. Food for Friends will remain an ongoing food drive to continue to aid students as long as the need is there. The “Tiny Techs” School Supply drive brought in donations of pens, pencils, markers, notebooks, rulers, crayons, and other school supplies for 40 children belonging to students of IntelliTec College. Like Food for Friends, this drive was meant to help students with the cost of living while furthering their education. The “Tiny Techs” school supplies were delivered to very appreciative kids on August 16th.
