Over 50 Students Participate in Saint Monica University's Opening Convocation

PRLog (Press Release) - Oct. 25, 2012 - Saint Monica University: The American International University, today announced that it has admitted over 50 students for the 2012/13 batch. The admitted students will take part in the University's Opening Convocation on Monday, October 29, 2012. Saint Monica University, fondly referred to as SMU, is the only American-style Christian university in Cameroon and students are taught to become saints and scholars.

The Opening Convocation event, usually referred to in Cameroon as “Matriculation,” will mark the official opening of the SMU academic year. Among the activities of the day will be a speech from the Chancellor that will outline the mission and vision of SMU, which emphasizes academic excellence and ethics. It will also distinguish the university from any other Cameroonian university as a place where students can “learn with support” and “graduate with confidence” that they have the skills to excel in the global economy. In addition, students will vote a Student Government and sign the SMU Honor Code.

“Saint Monica University has set out to positively distinguish itself from all other universities in Cameroon,” said Professor Bongasu Tanla-Kishani, President of SMU. “We’re committed to providing our students with an education that will not only transform their lives, but also transform society. Based on data from the Admissions Office, SMU had issued admission letters to 59 prospective students from within and outside of Cameroon as of Monday, October 22, 2012. Here is an analysis of the admission data:

a)   Total number of admitted students = 59
b)   Nationalities of admitted students = Cameroon (52), the United States (3), Tunisia (2), Nigeria (1), and Canada (1)
c)   Number of students per school = School of Business & Public Policy (46), School of Science, Engineering & Technology (11), and School of Arts & Education (2)
d)   Number of students per degree level = Undergraduate Students (21) and Graduate Students (38)
e)   Gender = Male (39); and Female (20)

One of the unique features of SMU is its Block Plan, where students study one course at a time for a period of one month and take an exam before moving to the next course. The Block Plan has also made it possible for the implementation of rolling admissions, which means that there is no deadline for applying into SMU. Students can also literally begin their studies at SMU at any time of the year. Given this flexibility, SMU Admissions Officers will continue to recruit students throughout the academic year.
