My name is Alejandra Meza. I’m 18 years old and I am currently a senior at the American School of Puerto Vallarta. Arturo, the PR director of my school invited me to participate in the Tweet to be Heard 4 PRO contest and said that I would be able to have an extra day to submit my response due to the fact that I received the information just yesterday. So I will attach my essay about social media in this message. Thank you for encouraging the younger generation to form part of this movement.
Myra Drucker, former Chief Investment Officer of GM Trust Bank once said, “One of the most important skills to have in business is the ability to translate complex concepts into plain English.” In AP Psychology, one of the first things we learned is about the importance of being parsimonious - that is, being able to express abstract and complex ideas in a clear, concise fashion. Communication skills are essential in today’s global society, due to their constant use within social networks.
We now live in an era, in which citizens are able stay connected 24/7; no matter their location, race, age, or gender. Some people say that we don’t know the value of something until its gone; in order to weight the value of social media in today’s world we must use our imagination. Imagine a single day without social networks. Impossible, right? It would create chaos within its citizens, due to the fact that we have developed a sense of dependency to these social networks. I believe that social media improves knowledge, expression as well as marketing.
Search engines, online encyclopedias, news pages, and networks such as Twitter have expanded knowledge throughout the whole world. In today’s society, anyone can access information about historical figures, disasters, or even watch live footage of important and current conferences or events. Social media has allowed information to be accessible to anyone at whatever time; opening the mind of each individual, and encouraging them to yearn for more knowledge.
Social media has enabled people to convey their beliefs and emotions through different ways. Social networks like YouTube, Myspace and Midomi, among others, have developed a secure place where musicians can feel free to upload their own material, or even covers of their favorite musical piece. Through these actions, many talented and determined people have been given the chance to appear in talk shows, or even sign record deals with big producers. The same thing occurred with personal blogs. Blogs have encouraged citizens to post their opinions about social issues, or even poems.
Social media has allowed anyone from citizen journalists who expose injustice in Syria, to talented musicians to convey their beliefs in a vivid way; sharing them with a wide and international audience.
Millions of businesses owe their success to social media marketing. Through this tool, different businesses have had the opportunity to approach their costumers in a rapid and effective way. You can approach your customers just by uploading videos about your products, or even keeping a Facebook page with all of the vital information. The customers can always look back at these information sources and find everything all the details about events, or about your new products.
As you can see, humans have grown a dependency towards social media. We need it in order to convey our knowledge, ideas and beliefs, as well as to promote certain events or firms.
