Oct. 24, 2012 - PRLog -- COLUMBUS, Oh. – The Campaign to Fix the Debt – a national nonpartisan coalition of business leaders, elected officials, community leaders, academics and individual citizens – officially launched its state chapter in Ohio to bring concerned individuals together and call lawmakers to address the ballooning national debt.

Campaign to Fix the Debt Ohio co-chairs and supporters including former Ohio Governor George Voinovich (R), State Representative Denise Driehaus (D-OH), and Hilliard City Councilman Jim Ashenhurst participated in the launch, which was held via a media conference call today.  The participants called on lawmakers in Washington to put aside political differences to find practical solutions to the debt and encouraged Ohio citizens to ask their leaders to take action.

“Our national debt is simply out of control," said Campaign to Fix the Debt state co-chair Former Governor, Senator and Cleveland Mayor George Voinovich." This massive debt is threatening the security of this country and the standard of living of our children and grandchildren.  It's time for Washington politicians to come together, put aside partisan politics and work on a solution to our debt problem.”

In addition to Senator Voinovich and State Representative Driehaus, other members of the Ohio Fix the Debt Steering Committee include:

·         Jim Ashenhurst, City Councilman, City of Hilliard

·         Ray Kirchner, Councilman, City of Mentor

·         Scott Miller, Director of Energy and Environmental Programs, Ohio University

·         Mary Leavitt, Owner, Flag Lady's Flag Store

·         Deborah Sutherland, Mayor, City of Bay Village

·         Rocky Boiman, Vice Chairman, Green Township Trustees

·         Zac Haines, President, Northeast Hamilton County Republican Club

·         Jim Ashenhurst, City Councilman, City of Hilliard

·         Dave Greenspan, County Council Member, Cuyahoga County

·         Bruce Akers, Former Mayor, Pepper Pike

·         Peter Corrigan, Board Member and Consultant for Prestolite Electric

·         Tucker Marston, Vice-President of Investments, MML Wealth Management (part of UBS financial services

In addition to the long-term challenges associated with our debt, lawmakers will also need to confront the rapidly approaching “fiscal cliff” – over $600 billion of spending cuts and tax hikes next year alone that analysts unanimously agree would push the country back into a recession.

"The debt has a huge impact on businesses, both big and small," said Mary Leavitt, owner of The Flag Lady's Flag Store in Columbus.  “This issue is impacting every level of the economy and the future of our country."

The Campaign to Fix the Debt is committed to advocating for our elected leaders to avert the cliff while gradually putting our debt on a sustainable course by generating more tax revenues and making smart spending cuts to programs that aren’t working or aren’t necessary.

“We are thrilled that the Campaign to Fix the Debt is involving so many Ohioans at the grassroots level,” said Maya MacGuineas, President of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, who is spearheading the Campaign. “In order to put our debt on a sustainable path, elected officials are going to have to make tough choices. These choices will be made easier if they know that the people they represent do indeed value cooperation and demand a long-term, comprehensive agreement over our debt.”

Through grassroots organizing, earned media activities and high-profile outreach, the Campaign to Fix the Debt is urging lawmakers to set aside political differences to formulate practical solutions to our nation’s debt problems.
