Florida Justice Association (FJA) President and Farmer, Jaffe, Weissing, Edwards, Fistos & Lehrman, P.L. attorney Gary M. Farmer, Jr. will be at St. Thomas University to address more than 150 students as part of FJA’s Law School Outreach Fall Tour. As FJA President, Farmer has made outreach to Florida’s law schools one of his top priorities. Farmer’s goal is to spread FJA’s mission of strengthening and upholding Florida’s civil justice system and protecting the rights of Florida citizens and consumers to access to court and trial by jury. This fall FJA will raise awareness among the next generation of lawyers and law school faculty about who FJA is, what FJA stands for and how FJA will work to protect against threats to the American civil justice system.
Student will view Hot Coffee, a documentary feature film by Susan Saladoff, which tells the story of Stella Liebeck, the Albuquerque woman who suffered third-degree burns as a result of McDonald’s policy of serving coffee at dangerously high temperatures. This is followed by an in depth conversation about the misconceptions about trial lawyers and discuss how corporations and insurance companies use strong public relations campaigns to spin media coverage and influence legislation. The movie also tracks efforts to remove justices and judges who oppose the legislative agendas of big business, and the students and Farmer will discuss the upcoming election with special emphasis on the importance of judicial and the merit retention election for Justices Lewis, Pariente and Quince. A reception follows.
Presentations have already been given at the University of Florida Levin College of Law, Florida State University College of Law, Florida Coastal School of Law and Florida A&M University College of Law. Later this week, on October 25th, Farmer will also present to the law students at Nova Southeastern University Shepard Broad Law Center.
The Florida Justice Association is dedicated to strengthening and upholding Florida’s civil justice system and protecting the rights of Florida’s citizens and consumers.
