Christmas Tree farmer’s effort to grow green

An East Sussex Christmas tree grower is hoping that his efforts to make his business as green as possible will attract local customers who want to keep their own carbon footprints as low as possible.

Oct. 23, 2012 - PRLog -- Clive Collins, who runs Catsfield Christmas Tree Farm, has always tried to run a ‘green’ operation by doing things like encouraging pest-eating insects and recycling trees. Wreaths are also made from branches that have been pruned.

Now Clive has taken two huge leaps forward in his efforts to be carbon neutral. The first was to have photovoltaic panels fitted which provide electricity for the business and allow him to feed into the national grid and now LED lamps are used where possible. He has also installed a large wood burner which provides all the heating and hot water for his business. Clive is hoping his efforts will mean that he will qualify for an RHI grant as well as encourage ‘green’ minded customers to buy Christmas trees from him.

This year, Clive has also decided to restrict deliveries to within a 15-mile radius of Catsfield rather than delivering nationwide as he has done for the last few years.

Clive said: “I’m very pleased and excited to be moving towards a carbon neutral operation. I feel strongly that we should all take advantage of the natural resources if we can. Also, my change in focus this year to local trees for local people will contribute to reducing carbon emissions.”
