Stu Pearman (http://www.scottmadden.com/bios/29/Stu-Pearman.html), partner and energy practice leader at ScottMadden, joined a distinguished panel for the session “Constraints and Opportunities in Generation: Portfolio Planning in the Current Landscape.” The panel, David Schwartz – panel moderator and partner at Latham & Watkins, Mark McCullough – executive vice preseident of generation at American Electric Power, Shawn Schukar – senior vice president at Ameren Energy, Paul Smith – director of business development at American Natural Gas Alliance, and Mr. Pearman highlighted key considerations for energy companies in the face of shifting fuel cost fundamentals, looming environmental constraints, and aging generation infrastructure. Additionally, Mr. Pearman moderated the session “The New Market Paradigm for Gas” which focused on natural gas prices, impacts on the desire to invest capex on natural gas infrastructure, and price volatility impacts on gas generation financing and development, among other topics. His panel of experts included Lori Schell – president at Empowered Energy, Bruce Henning – vice president of energy regulatory and market analysis at ICF International, and Erich Evans – director of regulatory strategy at NiSource Gas Distribution.

“Supply and demand move in response to price signals. But in natural gas, they move more like tectonic plates than like waves on an ocean,” said Mr. Pearman. “These demand and supply moves are more ‘lurching’ than fluid; pressure builds up and is then relieved. These lurching adjustments are why price volatility has been high, just as we predicted three years ago. And they are why volatility is likely to persist even though there is so much supply.”
