Angela Davis and Marcelle English, co-Founders of JGS became interested in partnering with the Center for Black Women's Wellness after becoming aware, not only of cancer's ravaging affects amongst young women, but the astonishing static that African-Americans are less likely than white women to get breast cancer, but yet have a higher death rate. English shares, "Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Black women and in 2010, the CDC reported that breast cancer was the leading cause of cancer death for Black women aged 45--64 years. Being a black woman with friends and family in this age range, it's very alarming." The CDC report also noted that the breast cancer death rate for women aged 45--64 years was 60% higher for black women than white women[1].
The Center for Black Women's Wellness (CBWW) is an Atlanta healthcare nonprofit organization is in its second year offering a gifting program for uninsured and low-income women in need of quality healthcare. "We are pleased to merge Atlanta's enthusiasm for sports with the need for more health education around breast cancer prevention among women attending Jersey Girl Sports 1st & Flirty for Breast Cancer Awareness event," says Jemea Dorsey, Chief Executive Officer of the Center for Black Women's Wellness (CBWW). "According to the Center for Disease Control & Prevention, Atlanta has higher than average incidence of breast cancer among African American women. For this reason, CBWW has long been involved in the fight to provide adequate medical care and early detection to Atlanta's women. We appreciate Jersey Girl Sports for allowing us the opportunity to share our message of empowerment and resources toward prevention to address this critical health issue."
