Oct. 19, 2012 - PRLog -- Gladys Williams has devoted more than 20 years providing services to those affected with cancer through CanCare. Because of her dedicated volunteerism, The Buckingham senior living community is recognizing Gladys Williams as a recipient of The Buckingham 2012 Salute to Seniors Award.  Pam Shepherd, Communications and Community Partnerships Assistant for CanCare, nominated Williams for the honor.

“Gladys is such an amazing person who gives unselfishly her time and attention to those in need,” said Shepherd. “CanCare has been honored to have her part of our team for more than 20 years.  She does so many things for the organization, and does it all with a big smile on her face.  Her laughter is contagious!”

The Buckingham Salute to Seniors Award is presented to honor an individual who is making a difference in their community.  Qualified nominees are active adults age 62 and above who volunteer their time and talents to their communities, and who also exemplify leadership, spirit, and citizenship.

“Being diagnosed with cancer is not an easy thing,” said Cathy Lightfoot, director of sales and marketing at The Buckingham.  “Knowing that there is an organization right here in our community that offers advice and support is a real blessing.  Having that support system can make all the difference in the world.”

Gladys, 81, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1989 and bravely fought and beat the disease.  She became a volunteer with CanCare in 1992 and has been serving the organization ever since, sharing her own cancer fighting experiences with hundreds of people.  Her main role is helping with referrals.  She learned Spanish fluently by studying in Guatemala and is a big asset to CanCare in reaching out to the Spanish speaking community.

“If I wasn’t volunteering with CanCare I don’t know what I’d be doing,” said Williams. “It makes life worth living when you can share your own experiences and let people know that it will be alright.”

When Williams isn’t volunteering, she works at Fox 26 television station assisting with the “Take it to Akin” show.  She has been married to her husband, Hugh, for nearly 59 years and they enjoy spending time with their children and grandchildren.

CanCare is a network of trained volunteers including cancer survivors, family members of cancer survivors and medical professionals who provide emotional support to others facing cancer. For more information, visit www.cancare.org.
