Angus McIntosh, biodynamic farmer at Spier Wine Estate, Stellenbosch, will receive a Good Earth Keeper Award for his humane treatment of farmed animals at a glittering Green Tie fund-raising dinner/dance/
The function is organised by Soil for Life in co-operation with Compassion in World Farming, with comedian Nik Rabinowitz as Master of Ceremonies. Said Tozie Zokufa, Compassion’s representative in South Africa: “Angus McIntosh puts commercial farming with animals into a class of its own. For virtually the same price as the produce that emanates from factory farms, his laying hens and broiler chickens enjoy lives thoroughly worth living and their end is as humane as it gets.”
The event, to commemorate World Food Day, will, inter alia, put the spotlight on the suffering of millions of animals in factory farms throughout South Africa. It will also focus on the urgent need for the evolution towards well-managed, humane, sustainable, small-scale farming. “We need to ensure that people have the know-how of how to cultivate food gardens, harvest a couple of eggs - or a free range chicken – in order to put food on their tables.
This is fundamental to poverty eradication and food security,” said Zokufa. Food and wine journalist Norman McFarlane will receive a Good Earth Keeper Award for his systematic promotion of ethical eating in the Press.
