Brig. Palsokar, as a Brigade Commander, was one of the major participants in the drama that unfolded as the fighting soon spread across Northern and Eastern Sri Lanka. His Brigade was deployed in the Mullaittivu sector, which is on the Eastern seaboard of Sri Lanka and it so happened that this was the stronghold of the LTTE. Resultantly, he and his men were embroiled in some of the heaviest fighting that the IPKF was involved in for two long years. The book is essentially about the experiences of one particular brigade of the IPKF.
Wars are fought and won by young soldiers, both officers and jawans. This book describes vividly the conditions in which they had to fight, their travails, difficulties and also how they coped over the two years that they were deployed there. War is a difficult experience at the best of times. Fighting in a foreign country, against an enemy one does not know, as also the fact that one is not fighting for the defence of one’s country, imposes very challenging burdens on the soldiers. This book highlights the problems at the very front, where danger and death are ever present. This book is as close as a common person will ever get to the front line.
The author served in the Indian Army for thirty years and the command of the Brigade was the high point of his military career. He belongs to a family with military traditions and has impressive professional qualifications, having studied in both UK and the USA. Unusually for soldier, he is also a prolific writer and he writes in both English and Marathi. His articles on national security and international affairs feature regularly in Marathi newspapers.
