Oct. 18, 2012 - PRLog -- Halloween is one of the most fun times of the year, especially for children. There are haunted houses to be visited, pumpkins to be carved, costumes to be made and, most importantly, free candy to be gathered. Trick-or-treating is the highlight of the holiday, so it’s important to make sure the event goes off without a hitch. To make sure that this Halloween is a safe and fun experience, take the following tips into consideration:

1.       Plan Ahead

When trick-or-treating, plan out a route ahead of time to avoid wandering too far home. It is dark outside and it is easy to become disoriented, making it difficult to figure out how to get home. Stick with a familiar route that is within reasonable walking distance.

Trick-or-treating could take you several streets away from your house, which can cause sore legs and a bit of frustration. Avoid long paths by mapping out a route before leaving the house. Stick to paths that you and your child are familiar with to avoid getting lost.Trick-or-treating could take you several streets away from your house, which can cause sore legs and a bit of frustration. 2.       Carry a Flashlight

Because there are numerous children and parents walking around in the dark, carry a flashlight to keep a pathway lit. This will help prevent accidents, such as tripping over a raised sidewalk, losing track of a child or bumping into other trick-or-treaters.

3.       Wear Proper Shoes

Children should wear comfortable, fitted footwear, such as tennis shoes.  Avoid anything with a heel and make sure all shoes are close toed. Tennis shoes are the best option, but make sure laces are double knotted to avoid dealing with the dangers of untied laces.

4.       Wear Fitted Costumes

Costumes should fit well to avoid any frustration that may arise from an outfit that is too tight against the skin or one that is constantly slipping and falling down because it is too large. Costumes should be hemmed above the foot to avoid any dragging on the ground that may cause tripping.

5.       Make sure you and your children are in comfortable, well-fitting shoes. Girls in dresses should avoid heels, and all shoelaces should be double-tied to avoid tripping in the dark.Long costumes that drag on the ground can be dangerous, especially at night. After purchasing your child’s costume, make sure it’s an appropriate length, and hem anything that’s too long to avoid tripping.Candy Check

At the end of the night, layout collected candy on a table or counter and throw out anything that is unwrapped or not in its original wrapper.

Following the above tips will ensure that  trick-or-treating in the neighborhood this Halloween is a safe and fun experience.
