In September of this year, Foothill Oral Surgery Center, the office of Dr. Michael Clark, in Mission Viejo, CA, made an investment in the future of implant dentistry. Dr. Michael Clark now has the ability to utilize digital cone beam images to plan and perform surgery on the computer before ever sitting over his patients.
Cone Beam CT’s are now readily accessible and affordable to patients. Dr. Michael Clark prescribes their usage almost routinely now when treatment planning for the placement of dental implants into the jaws to replace lost teeth. They can be viewed during consultation with the patient in order to show clearly what anatomical features may or may not be involved in the case. The patient can clearly see in three dimensions what their jaw looks like and they can feel properly informed.
After consultation, Dr. Clark takes the images and uploads them onto his computer. Using sophisticated technological software, he can place implants into the jaw images. He can look at them in three dimensions to ensure they will not encroach upon nerves, other tooth roots, or sinuses, and that they will be able to be restored cosmetically and functionally by the patient’s dentist. Dr. Clark sends the image with the implants on it to the laboratory for the fabrication of a customized surgical stent. That stent gets placed into the patients mouth at the time of surgery to ensure that the implants are placed into the jaw precisely where Dr. Clark planned them to be on the image.
In the past, implant surgeries were performed much differently. Two dimensional x-ray films were used to treatment plan cases. This caused for a lot of guessing when it came to implant placement as the third dimension was missing. No longer does the oral and maxillofacial surgeon need to guess.
