Oct. 17, 2012 - PRLog -- “BEHAILU ACADEMY OPENS TO PROVIDE ARTS PROGRAMS TO CHARLOTTE YOUTH”

(Charlotte, NC, October 17, 2012)…Behailu Academy, a new 501(c)(3) non-profit, whose mission is to provide arts and community service opportunities to youth, opens its doors this month in the NODA community. Located at 451 E. 36th St. in NODA, Behailu Academy plans a Grand Opening Kickoff on Friday October 19th with two FREE* programs: 3-6pm, a showcase of arts workshops and arts apprenticeships and 6:30-7:30pm, a Youth Poetry Slam/Open Mic. Youth who want to enter Slam/Open Mic need to sign up by 6pm.

*Friday classes are normally $5 but during the Oct 19th Kickoff, all classes are free.

"The Behailu Academy was founded so kids can find their voice through the arts,” commented Founder Deedee Mills. “It's about providing an opportunity that will empower them to not only make a difference in their future but also in the community we serve."

On Mondays-Thursdays, Behailu Academy hosts the Behailu Youth Artist Collective, a free after school youth apprenticeship project that encourages students to stay in school, engage in their communities and pursue arts affiliated opportunities. Additional programs will include short-term low-cost workshops (Five Buck Fridays), showcase events, artists’ talks and gallery crawls.

“We have had so much enthusiastic support from the community. The more I have seen people rally around our cause at Behailu Academy, the more we are certain of the need for this type of high quality arts programs for Charlotte's teens,” stated Camille Cushman, Executive Director.
