Children's author, Nechama Liss-Levinson is pleased to announce her new book, "When the Hurricane Came."  This book helps young readers learn to cope positively with the inevitable changes and occasional losses that life brings.

Nine-year-old Gertie and her family have to leave their home quickly when Hurricane Katrina is about to flood New Orleans. Gertie must leave behind her friends, her house, her "stuff" and life as she knew it before the storm. While spending the year in Memphis, Gertie figures out what's really important in life, including family, friends, faith and helping to make the world a better place.

This novel, for children ages 8-11, is based on the author's own volunteer experiences on two relief missions to New Orleans. As the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Katrina passes, we again remember how important it is for children to learn resilience in the face of life's difficulties.

"When the Hurricane Came" may be the only novel for children that looks at how Hurricane Katrina affected the life of a Jewish-American family.  This makes it a "valuable addition to children's literature," says Johanna Hurwitz, author of "Busybody Nora" and other popular children's books.
