Aspen Systems to Deliver Additional Lightweight Cooling Systems for Kestrel Surveillance Systems

Aspen Systems has been awarded a purchase order to manufacture additional Lightweight Cooling Systems for the Aerial Kestrel Surveillance Systems being used to monitor Forward Operating Bases.

Oct. 16, 2012 - PRLog -- Marlborough, MA – October 16, 2012 – Aspen Systems, Inc., a developer of miniaturized, rugged refrigeration systems, has been awarded a purchase order from Logos Technologies to manufacture an additional 26 customized Environmental Control Unit’s (ECU’s) for the Kestrel aerial surveillance system.  The unique ECU provides thermal management for critical components in the Kestrel surveillance camera suite.  Kestrel has the ability to scan a city-sized area from a tethered blimp during the day or at night for military forward-base protection.

The customized ECU uses Aspen’s miniature vapor compression refrigeration components and was built to remove 350 Watts of waste heat from the Kestrel surveillance system.  The system design went from the drawing board to low rate production in less than three months.  The airborne thermal management system meets critical size, weight, and power requirements of the program.  The ECU weighs a mere 12 pounds and is mounted atop the surveillance camera suite on the Kestrel.

This purchase order follows closely on the successful field performance of initial Kestrel Aerostats delivered to the military earlier this spring.

“We are pleased our technology has proved successful in assisting in the protection of our forces in Afghanistan.  The system developed for Logos Technologies is an example of how Aspen’s  ruggedized components can  be quickly configured to meet  stringent application requirements to enable systems such as the Kestrel Aerostat surveillance system,” stated Glenn Deming, Vice President of Aspen Systems.  “The ECUs ordered today like the ones delivered earlier this year, are headed directly to Afghanistan for force protection, ultimately saving the lives of troops at Forward Operating Bases.”
