Oct. 15, 2012 - PRLog -- 12 year old skate master Trey Wood wins the Damn Am at Woodward West.

About Trey Wood:

Wood trains extensively for his competitions at Kids That Rip Skateboard School, with over 40,000 sq feet of indoor skate park, it is recognized as one of the most progressive training facilities in the United States. It was custom designed and built by California Ramp Works (builders of the X-Games and Mega Ramp). Located in Mesa, AZ, KTR is under the family umbrella of Desert Devils multi-sports-plex facility, which offers programs for Skateboarding, Gymnastics, and Cheer.

Wood first jumped on a skateboard for the first time at the age of 3 while on a family trip to one of skateboarding’s original hot spots, Venice Beach, CA. He now resides in Arizona where he’s become a local legend due to his recent success as being featured at the X-Games, ESPN sports and the Disney Channel. He started competing at 6. Wood loves to skate the “vert ramp”, and is making a name for himself in street and the mega ramp. In the words of Trey Wood, “I live to skate and skate to live” You will most likely find Wood and his family enjoying a well earned chocolate ice cream break after his practice sessions at Kids That Rip skateboard school.

About DamnAm:

The Damn Am Series was created by Brian Schaefer and Rob Meronek as they noticed that there was a need to bring the Tampa-style am contests to skateboarders outside of Tampa. If you can't get into Tampa Am directly through your sponsor, entering a Damn Am is the only official way to qualify for Tampa Am. Basically, the “flavor" of the Tampa Contests is taken to locations around the country and Europe, too.

The first Damn Am started in 2001 at the Volcom Warehouse in Costa Mesa, CA and has been going strong ever since. The success of that event led the inception of the Minnesota Damn Am, taking place every June at 3rd Lair Skatepark in Minneapolis, MN, which has been running strong since 2003. In 2006, Volcom decided to help us take the Damn Am Series over the pond and the AmsterDamn Am was born and has been etched into the schedule as a yearly event. In 2008, the annual Canadian Damn Am was started and takes place in September every year. In 2011, we partnered with Nike SB to hold the first annual Damn Am in Shanghai, China.

The top 12 finalists at all Damn Am events get an automatic spot in Tampa Am, with the first two places getting thrown right into the Semi-Finals. In addition to a damn fun time, the Damn Ams have assisted with many ams getting noticed on their way to professional careers. To say that most of today’s top pros have skated in a Damn Am Contest is not a stretch of the truth at all. In fact, with most of the industry watching at these events, it’s not difficult at all for a stand-out skater to pick up a new sponsor and gain some notoriety.

Uncle Skate is a non-profit charity for skateboarders. Their mission is to donate free skateboards to children all over the world. Uncle Skate is not your typical skateboard charity organization. They connect the world through global contributions of skateboards and equipment. They help children and young adults realize their potential and build their futures. Changing perspectives and lives is what Uncle Skate prides itself on.

Uncle Skate creates a sense of awareness to those less fortunate around the world. They have developed crucial components that have a direct and lasting effect on the lives of young people who receive these skateboards. By collecting and donating skateboards away, Uncle Skate has created pillars that this non-profit follows:

• Allow children in poverished countries to enjoy the creative sport of skateboarding.
• Build self esteem and character through self confidence.
• Create leaders for tomorrow and help kids stay away from drugs and alcohol.

Uncle Skate has created its own philosophy and vision of what it would like to see in the future. A study shows that kids who participate in any type of sport are less likely to consume alcohol, get addicted to drugs, and even less likely to commit a criminal act. That being said, the more skateboards given out the better chance everyone has with the future of our global society.

What Have They Done So Far?

Uncle Skate is fortunate to have donated free skateboards to the following Nations:

Cuba, Thailand, Malaysia, Mexico, Brazil, Bahamas, Haiti, Jamaica, United States and Jordan

Uncle Skate is currently working on a 9,000 sq foot skatepark project in Puerto Penasco, Mexico in the northern state of Sonora.
