As both an internal company goal and to meet the requirements of the continual improvement philosophy inherent to their ISO 9001:2008 certified Quality Management System (QMS), the Orlando based Training Systems Division chose to implement their 2012 QMS internal process improvement strategy by first targeting the area of the management and oversight of programs and projects. To start this process, Corsair announced that all Program and Project Managers would be PMP certified within twelve months.
“As a company we felt having PMP-certified managers was important for two reasons. First, it would help our customers by ensuring that their projects were run as efficiently as possible and thus provide the absolute best return on investment from their training budget’” said Chuck Ehlert, Chief Executive Officer of Corsair. “Secondly, we wanted to show both our employees and our customers our total commitment to our Quality Management System.”
To aide their managers in achieving this requirement, Corsair retained certified Program Management Institute consultants to conduct the 25 week, 100 hour course of instruction for all their Orlando-based supervisors. The goal of the program was threefold: continuing education, a forum for sharing and developing fresh ideas, and team building. Aside from presentations relating program management best practices, the instructors utilized extensive examples and lessons learned from multiple industries. In addition, exercises and discussions specifically relating to Corsair, their current and past projects, and the training industry were utilized to help define potential areas for improvement.
“Although the investment was significant for both the company and our supervisory personnel who had to attend the course in the evening, we have been extremely happy with the results and the enthusiasm of our managers for the program,” explained Brant Bond, the Corsair Vice President for Training and Simulation. “Our managers have begun making modifications to our processes and procedures that will undoubtedly have a positive effect for our customers.”
