Oct. 15, 2012 - PRLog -- RICHMOND, Va. – Hardee’s® will show its support of Special Olympics Virginia as one of the sponsors of the Over The Edge rappelling event at the SunTrust Center in downtown Richmond on Thursday, Oct. 18.

Bill Boddie Jr., a member of the third generation of Boddie-Noell Enterprises, the largest Hardee’s franchisee in the U.S., will rappel 400 feet down the 25-story building with his fiancé, Laura. The soon-to-be married couple are “taking the leap” over the edge around 1:00 p.m.

Others going ‘over the edge’ include the Hardee’s Happy Star, Special Olympics athletes and local business executives. Over 100 participants raised $1,000 for the ‘privilege’ of rappelling.

In addition to the Over the Edge event, Hardee’s will show its support of Special Olympics Virginia by continuing its annual Buy a Star, Be a Fan fundraiser. The fundraiser invites all Virginia Hardee’s customers to purchase stars for $1 in exchange for a coupon sheet good for discounted Hardee’s menu items. The Buy a Star, Be a Fan fundraiser began in Hardee’s locations in early October and runs through the end of the month. All money raised from the sale of the stars will go to Special Olympics Virginia to help more than 360 Special Olympics athletes participate in the 2013 Summer Games.

Boddie-Noell Enterprises and Hardee’s also partner in Special Olympics Virginia’s Training for Life program by employing persons with intellectual disabilities, some of whom are Special Olympics athletes, and providing a welcome workplace environment that breeds success.

Boddie-Noell has been partners with Special Olympics Virginia for 35 years, contributing more than $1 million to the organization. Boddie-Noell owns and operates close to 200 Hardee’s restaurants across Virginia.

“We have a longstanding relationship of support with Special Olympics Virginia,” said Jerry Allsbrook, chief marketing officer for Boddie-Noell Enterprises and board member for Special Olympics Virginia. “We’re excited to continue our support of these athletes with the ‘Over the Edge’ event and our annual Buy a Star, Be a Fan fundraiser.”

The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. It provides them with continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness,
demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
