Founded in 1982 by a mother/daughter team of immigrants from Mexico, International Contact supports communal efforts that make Oakland an outstanding place to work and live, so they have chosen to celebrate their 30th anniversary by organizing a “Safe Halloween” block party outside their headquarters downtown.
Lincoln Elementary’s after school program run by OASES LEAP, a Project of EBAYC, confirmed that 130 children and 32 attending adults will join in the celebrations. Congresswoman Barbara Lee and supervisor Keith Carson’s office will also be represented when their additional proclamations are read at the start of the party.
The 15th Street block between Webster and Franklin will be closed from 4:30 to 7 on Wednesday, October 31st and will feature music, old-fashioned children’s street games, a fire truck for children to inspect, trick or treat, door prizes, neighborhood discounts, a taco truck and an international costume contest.
Some of the world class prizes generously provided by International Contact, Inc.’s clients are a Galaxy phone from Sprint, with a 3 month contract, deluxe make-up kits from Benefit Cosmetics and premier bicycle components from SRAM Corporation and accessories from Princeton Tech, BarMitts and Giro.
“Our long-term clients want to celebrate with us,” says Carla Itzkowich, International Contact’s executive director, “they say they want to make sure we stay in business providing all their language solutions for another 30 years!”
The neighbors on the street have also pitched in with organizing the carnival games and donating goods and services.
“We hope to introduce many people to our street to help celebrate all our small businesses,”
