Mr Drake’s presentation, “Crowdfunding as an Alternative Financial Support of University Innovation”, at Green Enterprising and University Innovation for a Sustainable Future will be the first time anyone has presented on this topic in Eastern Europe.
The Green Enterprising and University Innovation for a Sustainable Future conference will be held at Lomonosov Moscow State University on October 13-14 . The conference has been organised by Stockholm University, Moscow State University and Bauman Technical University and supported by the Swedish Institute. In attendance will be participants from 27 eastern European universities.
Mr Drake will present to academia, researchers and university students on the intricacies of and unique developments in the JOBS Act which was signed into law by President Obama on April 5, 2012 and which has spurred the dynamic growth of the crowd funding phenomenon in the USA. He had the privilege to witness this happen all over the nation as he worked with other thought leaders in this space, in particular as one of the founding members of CFIRA (CrowdFund Intermediary Regulatory Advocates) and CfPA (Crowdfund Professional Association)
The issues of Green Enterprising and University Innovation for a Sustainable Future are relevant now-days for universities in terms of financial management, in particular, cost-sharing and income generation. Due to globalization and uneven world demography, universities have to compete for domestic and foreign students, as well as for highly qualified staff, to ensure more income for operational expenses and development. They have to be more entrepreneurial, visible and accommodating and Green Enterprising is a potential strategic innovation for finance and management. Universities are large entities where large economies of scale to become “Greener” are possible as are innovations for sustainable development. This is because of the high number of staff and the use of a lot of space, infrastructure and facilities.
Of the Moscow conference, David Drake has said, “This will be an amazing opportunity to educate researchers and other members of academia in eastern Europe, bringing the best of our current developments in the crowd funding for equity marketplace while also learning from and establishing collaborative partnerships with new colleagues.”
“We must start with education to understand how the crowd can commercialize the concept of IP and start ups while also offering support groups and angels to better vet and assure IP and start up viability. Let the crowd in crowd funding check the viability of IP and products and also cross research but, as we are moving to do in the US, also allow the non-accredited to invest and finance new IP.”
“Crowd funding is one of many capital creation solutions for SMEs we cover in our presentations. While in Moscow, I would love to discuss EU - US Finance policy and compare it to Russian policy and similar programs,” said David Drake.
“I have not been in Russia for 20 years when I first visited St Petersburg and Moscow. I am very eager to see how the country has evolved since I was there last.”
