Theatre Conspiracy’s 2011 production of Becky’s New Car crosses the Causeway from Fort Myers and drives into BIG ARTS Herb Strauss Theater for an eight-night encore run. Laced with adult humor, playwright Steven Dietz spins a touching tale about the detours we make on the road to happiness. Becky’s New Car is the story of an “everyday”
Becky’s New Car has a unique back-story of how the play was brought to life. Seattle realtor Charles Staadecker met a woman who had commissioned a tuba concerto from the Seattle Symphony in memory of her husband. Staadecker was looking for a “major” gift to give his theater-loving wife Benita for her 60th birthday, so he brought the idea to A Contemporary Theatre (ACT) where Benita Staadecker was a Trustee. ACT worked with award-winning playwright Steven Dietz to create the play, which premiered at ACT in 2008. Dietz said he was inspired by the idea of a “regular” person having a double life. The Staadeckers were thrilled with the result of their commission, (they placed no restrictions on Dietz in his writing), and went on to travel with the show, speaking to audiences to encourage people to support the arts. In 2009, Becky’s New Car was one of six finalists for the prestigious Steinberg New Play Award given by the American Theatre Critics Association.
