Bristol-based sound design specialist’s Echoic have entered their third year with a gong – a prestigious Van D’Or Independent Film Award for Best Sound Design. Echoic received the accolade for their work on ‘The Flow’, an animation by renowned London-based visual artist MRK. The 36 strong judging panel was headed-up by award-winning director Gurinder Chadha OBE (Bend It Like Beckham, Bride and Prejudice) and winners were announced at the 2012 Van D’Or Awards Ceremony which was held this September in Shoreditch, London and hosted by film legend Barry Norman. The Flow will be screened this Thursday (11th October) in East London along with other Van D’Or winners and shortlistee’
Echoic’s creative director and co-founder David Johnston, who composed the winning piece with fellow co-founder Tom Gilbert, commented: “We started Echoic in 2010 with a drive and a passion for creating sound design that is both innovative and engaging. So it means a great deal to have won this – especially as it was awarded by some of the industry’s most respected figures.”
Gilbert explained: “We were given total creative freedom to explore the world MRK created. He’s an incredible artist and The Flow an outstanding piece so we are delighted we could support his incredible visual talent with our sound expertise to create a truly memorable film.“
The Flow beat five others nominees to the title ‘Best Sound Design’ and this year is the first in which Van D’Or has acknowledged work in this specialist field.
The animation itself was originally created in 2011 by Markos Kay (MRK) as a 20 second conceptual piece. This summer Kay developed the animation into a longer film commissioning Echoic for the sound design having been impressed by previous artistic collaborations the studio had undertaken.
Markos remarks: “Working with Echoic was an absolute breeze, they are a team of passionate musicians and sound designers that take pride in their work. They take projects seriously and with full commitment.”
“We want the Echoic name to become synonymous with all aspects of creative audio and we’ve worked exceptionally hard over the past two years to establish ourselves in an industry that’s predominantly focused in London. So, with an ever-building reputation and a portfolio that speaks for itself – we’ve worked with international brands such as McLaren, Peugeot, M&Ms, Intel, Xbox 360, Samsung and Red Bull as well as experimental colorations with artists such as Jordi Pages ,Vector Meldrew and of course MRK – we’re over the moon with how far we’ve already come”.
