Follow on Google News | Chase Wilson Education recognizes NJ teen for her volunteer workAfter overcoming a long history with bullying, Ashley Craig founded Students Against Being Bullied (S.A.B.B.) to empower students to fight back against bullying.
In Middle School, Craig was relentlessly taunted by a group of older boys. The bullying became so severe that her parents almost transferred her to another school. Even after overcoming her own personal struggles with the issue, Craig was confronted with a life-threatening situation towards the end of 8th grade. There, a boy confided in her that he was strongly considering killing himself as a result of bullying. Craig immediately reported the issue to the school Guidance Counselor who intervened. The boy later credited Craig with “saving his life.” This experience, coupled with her own personal history, led Craig to found S.A.B.B. and develop her own multi-tiered bullying prevention program. This program was implemented by her school last year. Since that time, Craig has been asked to speak at numerous events and conferences including but not limited to the FBI’s Youth Leadership Program and The Civil Rights and Hate Crimes Symposium in Birmingham, Alabama. Craig is the recipient of multiple honors and awards including a Certificate of Excellence from the Governor’s Office of NJ, the Caring Student of the Year Award, the Prudential Spirit of Community Award (2010 & 2012) and the President’s Volunteer Service Award (2010 & 2012). In the last six months alone, Craig has been asked to conduct over forty anti-bullying presentations to students, educators, law enforcement professionals, and school boards. She aspires towards a Federal Anti-Bullying Legislation, which she hopes to participate in someday.
