“Over the years I noted an intimacy and comraderie that is engendered while working and living together in remote wilderness locations” said Two Rivers Therapist Jeffrey Post-Holmberg. “Relationships between individual expedition members and between tent groups or glacier rope teams and the necessity of collaborating on common expedition goals and objectives, closely resemble the inner workings of couples and families. At one point in my career, I trained NASA space shuttle astronauts on decision-making and consensual leadership for extended space expeditions. At the end of many of these trips, Clients would frequently ask me if I had ever considered becoming a therapist. I laughed at the time, but look what I am doing now” muses Post-Holmberg.
In his therapy private practice, Post-Holmberg works with couples grieving the loss of a child or scarcity of intimacy and trust in their relationship, men who are going through transition as new fathers or processing relationship loss, and families searching for reconnection between family members. Additionally, work with women and men who have experienced trauma...military, domestic violence, or sexual exploitation is a big component of Two Rivers.
“One of our unique Client options, combines traditional talk therapy with walking along the trails of nearby Forest Park” adds Post-Holmberg. “This walk and talk therapy has taken off in a number of larger U.S. cities such as New York. Therapists and Clients utilize venues such as Central Park for an early morning or lunch time combination of discussing personal matters with getting out for some exercise. I couldn’t think of a better way to offer Portlanders a way to multi-task. The right-left, right-left repetitive footfall and arm swing, mirrors one of the therapeutic techniques currently used to help Clients reprocess traumatic events in their past. I am very excited to juxtapose therapy with walking.”
Beginning in November, Two Rivers will enter into a partnership with the environmental organization "1% For The Planet" to support non-profits dedicated to protecting the earth and it's inhabitants. "We are looking forward to being one of the few counseling practices in Portland to combine professional therapeutic practices with an active support for the environment. "A healthy planet promotes the emotional and psychological well-being of it's inhabitants"
This are a few other ways that Two Rivers therapist, Post-Holmberg blends his life lessons as an expedition leader with professional therapy and brings it all to the residents of Portland, Oregon.
