Hexavalent Chromium and Health Concerns Discussed in New Online Video

Oct. 7, 2012 - PRLog -- Today, the IAQ Video Network and Cochrane & Associates announced the release of another online video to help educate the public about issues that may impact their health.  The latest educational video discusses hexavalent chromium exposure in the workplace.  

Hexavalent chromium (chromium VI) is a toxic form of the element chromium. Hexavalent chromium compounds are man-made and widely used in many different industries.

“Workers who breathe hexavalent chromium may develop lung cancer,” reported Paul Cochrane, President of Cochrane and Associates, the company behind the IAQ Video Network and the new public outreach video.  “Some workers exposed to hexavalent chromium can also become allergic to the material.   For those individuals, inhaling chromate compounds can cause asthma symptoms such as wheezing and shortness of breath.  People can also develop an allergic skin reaction, called allergic contact dermatitis. This occurs from handling liquids or solids containing the material.  Direct skin contact with hexavalent chromium can also cause a non-allergic skin irritation. Contact with non-intact skin can lead to chrome ulcers.  We hope this video helps to educate workers about how to protect themselves from exposure to hexavalent chromium.”
