Ohio State Football: Is an Undefeated Season in Reach?

Fast forward past a grinding 1-point thriller over the Spartans and an offensive explosion under the lights against the Cornhuskers and suddenly this early-season dream seems much closer to reality.

Oct. 7, 2012 - PRLog -- Earlier this season we asked Horseshoe Insider Nation to predict the Buckeyes 2012 win-loss record. The overwhelming majority of 67% selected 10-2. Only 7% had the Buckeyes going undefeated.

Fast forward past a grinding 1-point thriller over the Spartans and an offensive explosion under the lights against the Cornhuskers and suddenly this early-season dream seems much closer to reality. Certainly there are roadblocks remaining. Going on the road to visit a resurgent Penn State in Happy Valley will not be easy.  And taking on the always tough Wisconsin at Camp Randall on November 17th, the week before the Michigan game, has trap game written all over it.

And then there is The Game on November 24th in the Shoe. Imagine if this game determines whether the Buckeyes go undefeated. And now imagine that Alabama, South Carolina and Oregon all suffer losses between now and then. And the Buckeyes stand as the only undefeated team in the land but are banned from a bowl game. Will we be crowned as National Champions? Or handed an asterisk and told to wait until next season?

I know. I know. There is a lot of B1G Ten football to be played between now and then. We need to stay healthy and stay focused. But given that only 7% of you predicted that we’d go undefeated…isn’t it fun to dream?

We put a Heisman poll up at the beginning of the season as well. Only 15% of you picked Braxton Miller as a viable candidate. Currently our poll is showing 59% in favor of Braxton with only 30% of you picking Gino Smith from West Virginia. Granted this has a hometown slant. But consider that Braxton is certainly a top 5 Heisman candidate and possibly even a top 3 contender at this moment.

Were we all too gun shy to predict these amazing things at the beginning of the season given the difficulties the program has had over recent years? Were we too afraid to get our hopes up? Is it too early to start talking about an undefeated season?
