Ms Luary Perez, the NAO registrar was very helpful in setting up this charity program in Cuba. There are not any manual osteopaths in Cuba and the health professionals there are not accustomed to osteopathy. World famous osteopath & president of NAO, Dr Shahin Pourgol was invited in September 18, 2012 to give a presentation in Havana introducing manual osteopathy to Cuban health practitioners. The seminar was also attended by directors of a number of polyclinics in Havana.
It has been decided that two manual osteopaths graduated from NAO be permitted to provide a month long free osteopathic treatments to Cubans in a polyclinic setting. This introduces the Cuban population to osteopathy while also providing an excellent training to new graduates.
Cuba has cultivated a large and resourceful network of health practitioners, which is made possible thanks to the well designed academic practices and the constant commitment of its top six medical universities to the improvement of healthcare professionals. The healthcare system in Cuba is made up of 60 different specialties.
Fifty one of these specialties are medical (including physiotherapy & natural medicine), with five dental, three nursing and one for psychology.
There are no private healthcare facilities in Cuba and all healthcare professionals are employees of the government.
This is the first time an osteopathy outreach program is established outside Canada by a Canadian osteopathy college.
National Academy of Osteopathy is the leader in providing innovative new ideas for the expansion of osteopathic profession internationally. NAO is the single most effective tool in expansion of osteopathy and we are proud to be able to bring pain relief through osteopathic treatments to the people of Cuba. We hope to expand our international manual osteopathy outreach program to other countries as well.
