Demetria L. Graves Installed on the Board of Black Women Lawyers of the Family Law Committee Chair

PRLog (Press Release) - Oct. 5, 2012 - Demtria L. Graves, a Glendale, California divorce attorney, was installed on the board of the Black Women Lawyers as the Pro Bono Committee Chair on September 28, 2012, at the SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills.

The Black Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles, Inc. (BWL) is a non-profit organization. The organization’s mission statement is to dedicate their efforts to various charitable, educational and community-based services. BWL was first founded in 1975 after a luncheon took place between a small group of African-American women attorneys and judges. The women discussed the lack of organizations which addressed the concerns of African-American women within the legal community. In an effort to fill this great void, the BWL was created. As time went by, the organization branched out and grew through a number of community-based projects and activities. The BWL held their first scholarship luncheon in 1975 at the Medallion Restaurant and since then, the BWL has gone on to raise scholarship funds each year for second and third year law students through its annual fundraising efforts. Since 1975, the BWL and its foundation has awarded over $100,000in scholarships and grants to law students.

In 1982, the BWL and Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles co-founded the Harriet Buhai Center for Family Law. Since its inception, the Center has grown into one of the main providers of pro bono family law services in the Los Angeles area. Due to the strides the Center has made in the community, the National Conference of Women Bar Associations presented its first annual Public Service Award to BWL and WLALA in July of 1985.

By 1992, the BWL Foundation was established to both support and fund the numerous educational, charitable and community-based services of the BWL. The BWL donates to battered women shelters, shelters for the homeless, it gives holiday food baskets to needy families, and it continuously works to expand its involvement in outreach programs in schools.
