Volvo Is Offering Remote Start on New Models, Even if They’ve Been Driven off the Lot!

Select 2012 and 2013 Volvo vehicles can now be equipped with Engine Remote Start (ERS), which will allow them to start their engine with the touch of a button. It’s operated from the key fob, and allows the owner of the vehicle to control the temperature of the vehicle’s interior for up to 15 minutes. Eligible vehicles include the XC60, XC70, S60, and S80.

The standard Personal Car Communicator (PCC) is used to operate the system. To activate it, drivers simply press the lock button, then hold the approach light button for two seconds; by way of confirmation, the vehicle will flash all four of its turn signals. The PCC will also display a visual confirmation that the ERS system is in use. The temperature of the vehicle will return to its setting upon being turned off, and the vehicle will be locked until the driver opens the doors.

In the name of safety, the ERS system will automatically deactivate under certain conditions. These conditions include the “lock” button being pressed, a door being opened, the accelerator or brake pedals being pressed, the gear selector being moved from “park,” too little fuel (usually about 2.5 gallons), or the ERS system being active for more than 15 minutes.

The MSRP of the ERS system is $499, and it’s a retailer-installed accessory. Current owners who want the ERS system installed are eligible for a $100 rebate from Volvo. This offer is only available through December 31, 2012.
