WIDS API technology allows transfer of curriculum data to/from other applications

Oct. 4, 2012 - PRLog -- The technology allows for data transfer to and/or from other software applications. Using the WIDS API, colleges avoid duplicate entry of key curriculum data by sharing WIDS data with other institutional applications.

“The WIDS API is beneficial,” said Evan Peterson, director of instructional technology and digital media at South Central College, in North Mankato, Minn. “It can pull out course outcome summary data and feed it into our e-course catalog and website so everything is consistent and current. ” In the end, the API capability saves significant time and energy, he added.

This technology, as part of the WIDS application, is now available for existing and new clients, according to WIDS Associate Director Robin Nickel. “Each client will have a unique interface for customized data transfer needs, and the updates will occur automatically,” she said.

As such, a college might publish course information data from WIDS in an online or print catalog. Using live data, the API allows seamless transfer of WIDS data to the catalog technology.

Similarly, program and course information, such as course title, number, competencies and credits might be pulled from WIDS for display on a college’s website. The API ensures one database drives the automatic updates, rather than relying on manual updates.

“Once you change data in WIDS, it will update your website automatically,” added Kevin Meech, software architect at Yahara Software, a WIDS software development partner. “This technology also allows clients to get data from an internal master system of record and update WIDS.”

While the transfer and sharing of critical curriculum data for such purposes is designed to significantly improve institutional efficiency, accuracy and consistency, the API relies on an independent interface to select required data.

“There is some upfront work necessary prior to launching the WIDS API, as an independent API interface is needed, but most colleges have developers on staff who can perform the initial coding,” said Meech. Clients may also work with Yahara to develop a custom interface.
