Oct. 4, 2012 - PRLog -- Individualized patient treatment has always been a major goal in our practice and vital to our success in helping patients manage Type 2 diabetes. Now the American Diabetes Association is emphasizing this approach to care as well.

In new recommendations, the ADA says medical providers should focus on patients’ individual needs, preferences and tolerances as well as age and disease progression.

Patients respond in various ways to different medications, so no single treatment regimen will work for every one In older patients, drug safety is key when prescribing anti-hyperglycemic agents.

At Draelos Metabolic Center, we aim to work with patients of all ages to come up with an individualized personal plan that fits each person’s lifestyle and medical needs. We have found this approach leads to better success in controlling glucose and decreasing complications.

It has worked wonders for a lot of our patients. Here are a couple of those stories:

In the summer of 2010, James Wellman weighed 367 pounds. He had dropped to 322 pounds by the following April, but his A1C still was elevated at 9.6 and his blood glucose averaged over 250.

When he was referred to Draelos Metabolic Center, James was taking large doses of multiple diabetic drugs. After half a dozen visits with Dr. Draelos and Sharon Bolton, PA-C, he was able to cut down on his medications. He has lost more weight, dropping to 267 pounds and lowered his A1C to 5.9 and his average blood sugar to under 120.

"I went from a size 52 waist to a size 46,” he says. “I feel great!”

Susan is another client who has seen great results with a personalized treatment plan.

She was unhappy when, after switching to a new diabetic medication, she gained 100 pounds. She was having trouble with mobility and dissatisfied with her health. That is when she turned to the Draelos Metabolic Center team for help. The Draelos team introduced her to a new medicine, Byetta.

“It’s been a lifesaver to me. I’ve lost 120 pounds and walk without a cane now,” Susan says. “I am happy, energetic and very focused on my health.”

It is these sorts of success stories that are our greatest reward!
