As a Michigan-certified technician of the national Look Good Feel Better Adult and Teen Program for over 20 years, Maggie volunteers her time and talent to teach cancer patients how to deal with the appearance-related side effects of chemotherapy and radiation. After noticing the need to help young people and families in their struggle with health challenges causing hair loss, she founded Wigs 4 Kids in October 2003. A nonprofit organization that initially operated out of Maggie’s own salon, Wigs 4 Kids provides children with wigs, fitting and cutting, products, and education on how to maintain their new hair prosthetic at no charge.
In 2010, the Wigs 4 Kids Wellness Center and Salon opened its doors to further assist the children of Michigan. In the new center, Wigs 4 Kids offers emotional, psychological, and social support in an affirming setting where kids can participate in art and music therapy, nutrition classes, and social groups with other children.
Maggie Varney and Wigs 4 Kids have received numerous awards and commendations, including the Michigan Governor’s Service Award for Exemplary Community Service (2007), the Macomb County Board of Commissioners’
