The new service is designed for phones that do not have Internet capabilities or for people who lack access to the digital world through Internet-enabled phones, laptops or Internet infrastructure, providing them the easiest way to access Internet webpages from their handsets via normal text messages.
By using the Tigo SMS Internet service powered by Dotgo, users can read news and have the latest information at their fingertips by simply sending the address of the website to 15686. A confirmation message with a ‘free week trial’ of the product will be sent to the user alerting them about their subscription. After the free trial period ends, users will be given the option to opt out or continue to enjoy the service at Tsh 97 per day, with unlimited access to all webpages for a whole day. To de-register from the service users would need to send the word ONDOA to 15686.
“This platform is an innovative SMS-based application that will give our customers access to the Internet,” said David Zacharia, Tigo Entertainment Category Manager. “Tigo SMS Internet will help diminish the digital divide in Tanzania by enabling access into the digital world for millions of Tanzanians at a very affordable cost,” he said.
