Indianapolis, IN Shar Brown of Shar’s Hair & Wig Boutique announced today that Joy Flaherty, People to People Student Ambassador will be participating in this year’s Glamourganza event in order to support breast cancer awareness and raise funds towards her People to People Student Ambassador trip next summer. At 12 years old, Joy is the youngest vendor at the event but perhaps one with the most reasons to participate.
At the event, aided by her mom and dad, Marty and Julie Flaherty, Joy will be showcasing and selling Paparazzi Jewelry. The 1st Annual Glamourganza centers around the theme of helping women to look and feel their best and Joy says “Everybody needs a little bling in their life.” Her product line includes fashionable accessories, headbands, earrings, bracelets, and rings and all of the jewelry available will sell for $5 each making fashion truly accessible to anybody in attendance.
When asked about her interest in participating in the event, Joy knew it was a perfect fit for her because it not only gives her a chance to earn towards her People to People trip to Europe but also support breast cancer awareness which is a subject near and dear in the Flaherty household. Joy shared that just three years ago, her dad was diagnosed with breast cancer and within 2 weeks of diagnosis underwent a mastectomy. Breast cancer affects less than 1% of men so the diagnosis was a shock to the whole family. Joy remembers being very scared at that time. “I was kind of freaking out but my brothers and sisters were there to calm me down.” Happily, her dad is now cancer free and doing fine.
Dad will be there to support Joy at the October 13th event and he says he’s “not afraid to wear pink!” He’s looking forward to supporting Joy in her goal just as she supported his recovery during those scary times three years ago.
Joy’s efforts to fundraising will go a long way towards funding her People to People experience in Europe next summer. The People to People Student Ambassador Program was established in 1956 by President Eisenhower with a mission “to bridge cultural and political borders through education and exchange, creating global citizens and making the world a better place for future generations.”
Students like Joy travel to different areas of the world as part of a delegation from their local area. Joy’s delegation, which has 40 other kids, will be going to England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Central Indiana has more than 40 delegations, one of which includes Joy’s older brother, Jerry, who was a delegate last year and is planning to go to Japan with his delegation next summer. People to People Student Ambassadors not only have to be accepted into the program based on numerous criteria but once accepted are responsible for raising the funds for their experience.
