Highlighting the 25th annual Downriver Community Prayer Breakfast at the Crystal Gardens in Southgate on Dec. 7 will be former Detroit Tigers' pitcher Frank Tanana.
The former Tiger pitcher, dubbed "Tan-talizing Tanana" by legendary Tigers broadcaster, Ernie Harwell, Tanana pitched for the Detroit team from 1985 to 1992. Throughout his career, which began with the California Angels in 1973 and ended with the New York Yankees in 1993, Tanana accumulated 34 shutouts, 4,000 innings pitched and 2,773 strikeouts.
A native Detroiter, Tanana attended Detroit Catholic Central High School before launching his baseball career. Midway through his career, he converted to Protestantism and became a leader in the Christian community.
Currently, he resides in Farmington Hills, where he and his wife, Cathy Mull, both serve on the Pro Athletes Outreach Board of Directors and are involved in the Home Plate and Career Impact ministries. In 2006, Tanana was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame.
