Purana Quila Dance Festival...

Oct. 3, 2012 - PRLog -- Delhi is not only the national capital, but the hub of culture and traditions from all parts of the country. So, what could be a better destination for a dance festival that brings together dance forms from all over India? Purana Quila is an excellent choice as a venue, as it provides the perfect backdrop and enjoys a strategic location that is well connected by metro, buses and wide roads. Dating back to the 16th century, the Purana Quila stands on the road leading to ITO, Pragati Maidan and Zoo, in quiet testimony of the glorious days during the Mughal Rule. It is now a popular tourist destination; and a venue to this yearly dance festival.
Early October is a great time in North India – the summer is almost gone; there is a mild nip in the air that heralds winter. The Purana Quila Festival is perfectly timed in this transition over a period of five days every year when groups of classical dancers perform. This year, the dates of the festival are from 6th to 10th of October. The festival is christened “Ananya”, or the unparalleled. It has gained fame as the most important classical dance festival in India. The event is an initiative by the Department of Art, Culture and Languages, Government of Delhi and SEHER (a NGO) in collaboration with Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and Doordarshan. This year, the festival shall achieve its 11th edition.
The festival is scheduled from 7:00 PM to 8:15 PM everyday – so one can attend it on weekdays after work. Entry is free, but on first-come-first-serve basis. This year, the performers shall interact with school students in Delhi to inculcate in them the passion for classical dance.
You have to block your calendar for every evening during this week as you should not miss any of the performances. This festival shall begin with a graceful performance of Bharatnatyam by Saroja Vaidyanathan’s group from Delhi, the home state. Rani Karnaa Nayak’s group from Kolkata shall present a soulful evening of Katthak dance on the next day. Vijayalakshmi and group from Delhi shall add a divine touch to the festival with their rendition of Mohiniattam on Monday, the 8th. On 9th, Bichitrananda Swain’s group, Rudraksh, from Bhubaneshwar shall bring to you the temple dance of Orissa, called Odissi. The festival shall come to a close with a performance of Bharatnatyam by Shijith Nambiar, Parvathy Menon and group on the 10th, Wednesday.
The choreographers and artistes of performances that will enthrall you this year shall interact with general public at the New Conference Hall, India International Centre, Lodi Estate on October 9th and 10th from 10.30 AM to 1.30 PM to share insights into their performances. The 2-day seminar is titled “Pratibimb”, or reflection.
If you are tied up for any reason and cannot make it on aparticular evening, just tune in to the internet where you can watch live webcast of the performances – just like a live telecast on television.  The publicity for this event starts about a month ahead of it, when posters are put up at all prominent locations to invite one and all.
